Our Future Robot Overlords

Well, we all know about the UAV's in Iraq that can actually track and eliminate insurgents. Pretty awesome military technology, but yeah, its still remote piloted by a living breathing human. Now, now - thats not all that fancy. Where's all the money poured into AI gone?

Screw the US military. Samsung on the other hand, has partnered with Korea University to develop a machine-gun equipped sentry robot. Its not that far a leap into the future yet - it only detects humans and shoots them. After an audible warning has been issued to the poor fool. These robots cost $200 000 and are probably going to be deployed along the border of South and North Korea. Poor starving North Korean peasants.

Not that impressive, but its still somewhat of a portent of the future no? As the Animatrix so wonderfully depicts, robots need not be all that smart to beat us. Armed with decent AI and an inorganic structure impervious to contagions, heat, cold etc; they would probably own us easily. And well, with also huge numbers and/or awesome firepower. Tireless, unforgetting agents of destruction. Owh well, here's to building the next generation of robots. I wonder if I'll live to see the day I get torn apart by my own creation (assuming I end up doing that. Yea, that'll be a pleasant future - the building of them I mean)

This gives me weird Frankenstein-esque chills. I never liked robots/machines that look or act too much like humans. I was reading Time magazine once and they had this article on new gadgets... there was this pretty human looking tourist guide robot that scared the heck out of me.
